AI build readiness checklist

Twenty questions to answer before you pay for a model: what it should decide, whether your data is good enough, and whether you're allowed to use it.

The checklist

Score yourself in five minutes

The problem

1Can you say in one sentence what the model should decide or produce?
2Is someone doing this today, and could they explain how they decide?
3Do you know what a wrong answer costs you?
4Do you know how you would measure whether it worked, for example accuracy or time saved?
5Is the task done often enough, or is each case costly enough, to be worth building for?

The data

6Do you know where the data lives, and who controls it?
7Do past cases have the right answer recorded with them (the outcome you want the model to predict)?
8Is there enough history: at least a year, or several hundred past cases?
9Is the data mostly complete, with few blanks?
10Is the same thing recorded the same way everywhere (codes, formats, names)?
11Can it be exported without anyone retyping it?

Permission

12If the data includes personal data, do you know your lawful basis for using it this way under the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843)?
13Is your organisation registered with the Data Protection Commission?
14Do your contracts and customer terms allow the data to be used like this?
15Can the data be stored and processed where the model will run, including outside Ghana if a tool is hosted abroad?

People

16Is there a named owner for the project on your side?
17Will the people who use the output help test it?
18Will someone check what the model produces, at least at first?
19Have you decided what happens when the model is unsure or wrong?
20Is there an owner and a budget to maintain it after it is built?
